Leech Breeding in Laboratory
HVM Leeches have initiated the production process of leeches in laboratories, in addition to them being produced in their natural habitats. The leeches are fed with live frogs, fishes and with the blood of winged animals that are provided by certificated firms. Eventually leeches that grow to certain sizes are left to starve for up to at least 3 months and then are taken into another container where they are sterilized and finally sold in markets. The food types and their quantities that are fed to baby leeches change on a monthly basis. As a result, laboratory based leech breeding is faster and creates the optimum conditions for breeding. For these reasons, this method is preferred and more efficient in comparison to natural habitat breeding.
